One of the first tasks you'll be assigned here is to prepare the new books for use. To do this, you'll need:
- White glue AND glue sticks
- Paper (we prefer to use legal size)
- Scissors
- Pen
- Stamp pad
- Accession stamp
- Library stamp
- The Dewey notebook
- Stack of books to be prepared
STEP 1: Accession
Turn to the book's Copyright page. If you have no idea what that is, click here to go to the Parts of a book topic. There, you'll stamp the book's Accession. If there's no room on the page for the stamp, put it on the closest page that does have room. If the book has dark/ black pages so that the stamp doesn't show up, put it on the front/ back cover.
Now, fill out the accession with the information given to you: Source of the book, Price, Dewey number (will be written on the first page, top right corner), and the date the book arrived at the library. Leave LOC blank.
STEP 2: Library stamp
Now, use the narrow Library stamp to stamp the top and side of the book. Open it, and you'll put a stamp on page 21 (if the book has that many pages) and three other pages. Most important: make sure that, wherever you stamp, it does not block any of the book's text. That means stamps go along the top, bottom or side of the page.
STEP 3: Inserts and Date slips
If you have a hardcover book, this step is simple: use the glue stick to stick the date slip on the endsheet at the front of the book. If your book is not hardcover, however, or doesn't have that hard page for some reason, you'll need to put in an endsheet.
Take a sheet of legal paper and fold it in half. Measure this against the book's cover, and then trim the outer edges of the paper so that the result will be smaller than the book.
Now, take the liquid glue and leave a thin stream of glue in the crease between the outer cover and the first page. Stick the folded edge of the paper insert into the glue, open it up and press the fold into it with your nail/ a ruler to make sure it's stuck tight.
Now, you can stick the date slip into the inside of the endsheet.
STEP 4: Dewey
Make a note of the book's Dewey number in the Dewey notebook, and you're done!
